FCA and PSR highlight consumer shift towards digital wallets in recent study

The FCA and PSR have released insights into the burgeoning use of digital wallets in the UK, revealing a dramatic increase in adoption.

According to their findings, the proportion of card transactions using digital wallets has surged from 8% in 2019 to 29% in 2023. This sharp rise underscores the shifting consumer preference towards digital payment solutions, which offer enhanced convenience, security, and potential for financial inclusion.

The regulators engaged with various businesses and groups to gauge the broader impacts of digital wallet usage. They uncovered that, alongside the benefits, there are significant areas needing attention to foster a competitive market.

Key concerns include the need for improved competition among digital wallet providers and the lowering of barriers for new entrants to stimulate innovation. Such measures could diversify available payment methods, providing consumers with more choices.

The FCA and PSR have taken proactive steps to address these concerns by coordinating with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which is currently examining the dominant positions of Apple and Google within mobile ecosystems. This collaboration aims to prevent regulatory overlap and ensure a fair playing field for all market participants.

Furthermore, the regulators plan to consult with the Treasury to revise the Payment Services and Electronic Money Regulations, ensuring the framework supports future technological advancements. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to advance open banking and contactless payment options, enhancing competition and fostering growth within the UK’s financial landscape. The overall strategy supports the National Payments Vision, which advocates for a modern, resilient, and innovative payment system that meets the dynamic needs of consumers and businesses.

The findings from this study not only highlight the rapid adoption of digital wallets but also frame the ongoing regulatory responses aimed at nurturing an inclusive and competitive market environment.
