Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank has partnered with SCSK Corporation and OneSpan to enhance mobile banking security with a cloud-based FIDO authentication solution.
The collaboration combines the strengths of SCSK and OneSpan to support SuMiTB’s long-term digital security ambitions.
The partnership is driven by a need to address escalating phishing-related fraud and account takeover incidents in Japan. With fraud losses projected to reach around ¥690bn in 2025 and new regulatory pressure to adopt stronger multi-factor authentication, SuMiTB aims to modernise its defences with a future-ready authentication framework.
Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank is a major financial institution in Japan offering trust, banking and asset management services to a large domestic and international customer base. SCSK Corporation provides a wide range of IT solutions, including systems integration, cloud services and security support across multiple industries. OneSpan, headquartered in the US, supplies digital security, authentication and transaction protection technologies to banks and businesses worldwide.
The partnership introduces OneSpan’s cloud-based FIDO authentication technology into SuMiTB’s mobile banking infrastructure. While FIDO authentication has previously been deployed largely for login purposes, SuMiTB plans to integrate this technology directly into transaction flows. The move is expected to reduce account impersonation risks, strengthen verification processes and create what may become one of Japan’s most advanced mobile banking security frameworks.
Japan’s Financial Services Agency has recently proposed amendments requiring phishing-resistant authentication across financial institutions. Against this backdrop, SuMiTB’s deployment supports industry-wide momentum toward stronger digital security standards, providing a model for other banks seeking to meet upcoming regulatory expectations.
The solution, OneSpan Cloud Authentication, offers a cloud-based multi-factor authentication environment designed for rapid deployment, scalability and compliance with stringent regulatory requirements. It forms part of OneSpan’s broader authentication suite, which includes both cloud and on-premises options, spanning Digipass protocols, passkeys, FIDO UAF and Cronto visual signing technology.
“We are proud to be chosen by SuMiTB and SCSK for this landmark project,” OneSpan CEO Victor Limongelli said. “This selection not only underscores OneSpan’s leadership and credibility in Japan’s rapidly evolving FIDO market, but also demonstrates our ability to deliver enterprise-scale, phishing-resistant authentication that meets the highest regulatory standards. We are committed to helping financial institutions protect their customers and set new benchmarks for digital security.”
“We are honored to support SuMiTB in deploying OneSpan’s cloud-based FIDO authentication solution for mobile banking,” SCSK senior executive officer Hideho Masuda said. “This implementation demonstrates SCSK’s commitment to providing advanced, secure authentication solutions to the Japanese financial sector, and highlights the strength of our partnership with OneSpan.”
