Proofpoint, a US-based cybersecurity and compliance provider, has completed its acquisition of Hornetsecurity Group.
The move represents an important step in Proofpoint’s ambition to extend its human-centric security offering globally and deepen its reach across smaller organisations and the managed services channel.
The acquisition, valued at $1.8bn, strengthens Proofpoint’s strategy to scale its capabilities for MSPs and SMBs. Hornetsecurity brings a strong European footprint and a partner ecosystem that supports more than 125,000 customers via over 12,000 MSPs and channel partners. Proofpoint said the deal equips the company to accelerate its mission to secure what it calls the “agentic workspace”, offering protection across people, data, and AI-driven systems.
Proofpoint focuses on safeguarding organisations from advanced threats with cloud-based cybersecurity, compliance, and threat intelligence solutions. The company has built a reputation for its people-centred approach to security, offering tools ranging from email threat detection to data loss prevention.
Hornetsecurity, meanwhile, specialises in Microsoft 365 protection for SMBs and MSPs, with products spanning email defences, backup and recovery, compliance automation, and security awareness training. Its flagship platform, 365 Total Protection, offers a comprehensive suite of services within a single cloud-based environment and allows MSPs to manage customers through a multi-tenant console.
As part of the acquisition, Hornetsecurity will operate as a dedicated business unit within Proofpoint. Founder Daniel Hofmann will continue to lead the unit as executive vice president and general manager, supported by his existing leadership team. Proofpoint said customers and partners should expect uninterrupted service, with added benefits from its global research, resources, and threat intelligence.
The acquisition also aligns with Proofpoint’s aim to deliver differentiated, AI-powered security to organisations regardless of geography or size. Hornetsecurity currently generates nearly $200m in annual recurring revenue, growing at 20% year-over-year, reinforcing its standing as one of Europe’s fastest-growing cloud security providers.
Proofpoint CEO Sumit Dhawan said, “We’re thrilled to officially welcome Hornetsecurity to Proofpoint and further our mission to protect the emerging agentic workspace for customers of every size. Together, we will extend our human and agent-centric security leadership to safeguard people, AI agents, and data, while expanding our reach to SMBs and MSPs with Hornetsecurity’s proven, scalable platform. As threats grow faster and more targeted, our combined expertise will raise the bar for innovation and resilience—helping customers and partners worldwide safeguard what matters most.”
Hornetsecurity founder and CEO Daniel Hofmann said, “Joining Proofpoint marks a new chapter in our journey. Together, we’re uniquely positioned to deliver the most effective M365 security and data protection to MSPs around the world. Building on our time-tested and well-established channel-centric approach, our combined capabilities, shared threat intelligence, and aligned vision will drive a new level of innovation and value for our partners and customers globally.”
