The Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ) has officially released its first set of sustainability disclosure standards, a significant step towards aligning with global practices.
Established in July 2022, the SSBJ aims to develop standards that not only cater to the domestic market in Japan but also harmonize with the International Sustainability Standards Board’s (ISSB) IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
This strategic alignment is designed to ensure that the disclosed information meets international comparability standards. After extensive discussions and deliberations, the SSBJ unveiled three distinct standards at their 49th Board Meeting on February 19, 2025. These include the Universal Sustainability Disclosure Standard titled “Application of the Sustainability Disclosure Standards,” along with two theme-based standards: “General Disclosures” and “Climate-related Disclosures.”
Currently, the SSBJ Standards are available exclusively in Japanese, catering primarily to domestic stakeholders. However, recognizing the global interest in these standards, an English overview has been provided. The SSBJ also plans to release a detailed schedule of differences and a concordance table between the ISSB Standards and SSBJ Standards in English, ensuring transparency and accessibility for international stakeholders.
