Varonis acquires SlashNext to boost AI email security

Varonis

Varonis has acquired SlashNext in a strategic move to strengthen its threat detection and response capabilities across email and collaboration platforms.

Varonis, headquartered in New York, is known for its data-centric security solutions, while California-based SlashNext specialises in AI-powered phishing detection and social engineering attack prevention.

The acquisition is designed to integrate SlashNext’s phishing and social engineering defence technology into Varonis’ data security platform and managed data detection and response (MDDR) service. This will provide customers with end-to-end protection, from the first point of attack to preventing full-scale data breaches. The financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

Varonis focuses on real-time data detection, response, and incident prevention. The company has a history of introducing pioneering security capabilities, including user behaviour analytics in 2016, an incident response organisation in 2018, and its MDDR service in 2024, which boasts a 30-minute ransomware response SLA and has investigated over 10,000 incidents globally.

SlashNext, founded by Atif Mushtaq, uses advanced AI models, including computer vision, natural language processing, and virtual browsers, to defend against a broad range of social engineering attacks across email, messaging, and collaboration platforms such as WhatsApp, Slack, Teams, and Zoom. Independent testing by the Tolly Group showed SlashNext outperformed major competitors like Abnormal Security and Mimecast, achieving a 99% detection accuracy and 100% detection rate for BEC and QR code attacks.

Atif Mushtaq brings extensive expertise from his nine years at FireEye, where he was a senior scientist and a key figure in developing malware detection technologies. His work at SlashNext focuses on identifying subtle characteristics in phishing messages, enabling the AI models to detect both expert-created and AI-generated threats with unprecedented accuracy.

The acquisition combines SlashNext’s AI-based phishing defence with Varonis’ data-centric security approach, offering customers a unified solution to detect and stop attacks before data is compromised.
