Unit 221B, a threat disruption company specialising in actionable threat intelligence and cyber solutions, has closed a $5m seed funding round.

The financing was led by J2 Ventures, with additional backing from Pipeline Capital and other investors.

Founded by a team of veteran intelligence and technology experts, Unit 221B is building a crime-fighting ecosystem aimed at delivering tangible outcomes in the fight against cybercrime. Its flagship platform, eWitness, is already used by more than 50 Fortune 500 companies and by international, federal, and local law enforcement bodies around the world.

The company plans to use the fresh capital to expand its platform with new tools designed to accelerate investigative collaboration. It will also support wider go-to-market initiatives.

The announcement comes at a time when cybercrime is escalating due to the rapid growth of the digital attack surface, the reliance on interconnected infrastructure, and the rise of AI-powered threats. Criminal groups are increasingly targeting not just critical industries such as financial services, telecoms and transport, but also everyday platforms including social media, gaming, FinTech apps, and delivery services.

Unit 221B CEO May Chen-Contino said, “These companies not only face financial loss and the risk of real-world harm to their employees and users, but are now in the spotlight for regulatory actions, lawsuits, and reputational damage in a landscape that demands faster, more effective responses. Collective action has the power to change outcomes. We are uniting investigators across enterprises, law enforcement, and governments to create a safer online and offline world. The only way to disrupt these criminal networks is by working together.”

In 2024, enterprises faced record-breaking financial crime losses, according to FBI figures. The agency’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) logged 859,532 complaints totalling $16.6bn in losses, up 33% from the previous year. Cases of financial sextortion rose to almost 100 reports daily, while violent online group exploitation climbed to more than 1,300 incidents, a 200% increase. Networks such as The Com, also known as Scattered Spider, and its subgroup 764 have become so active that the FBI now classifies them as a Tier One terrorist threat, with 250 ongoing investigations as of May 2025.

J2 Ventures general partner Christine Keung said, “Unit 221B is solving a real pain point that many cybersecurity vendors overlook or are unable to solve. With experience in supporting federal prosecution, military cyber operations, Fortune 500 security teams and leadership, and world-renowned threat research, the Unit 221B team is uniquely equipped to expose and dismantle some of the most notorious online criminal groups. They support arrests and civil actions on behalf of global clients within the public and private sectors. They’re the missing puzzle piece in threat disruption and attribution. It’s a paradigm shift in this market, and we’re thrilled to support them.”

At the centre of the company’s approach is its proprietary platform, eWitness. The system brings together a curated network of investigators, analysts, and researchers, with a particular focus on human intelligence (HUMINT). This capability enables the platform to capture and preserve high-signal threat data even if it is later removed from its original source. Access is invite-only, with all users vetted to ensure the intelligence gathered remains trustworthy and impactful.
