DPP Link unveils GS1 Shield for EU DPP rules

DPP

DPP Link, a Stoke-on-Trent-based RegTech, has launched a GS1-integrated Shield platform to help exporters and manufacturers prepare for the European Union’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), Regulation (EU) 2024/1781.

The new product has been introduced in response to fast-approaching EU deadlines that will fundamentally reshape how physical goods are traded within the bloc. From 19 July 2026, the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) Registry will become fully operational, while large enterprises will also face enforcement of the Ban on the Destruction of Unsold Goods. Together, these measures mark a shift to mandatory digital product identities for nearly all goods placed on the European market, placing new compliance obligations on manufacturers, importers and exporters.

DPP Link Ltd operates as a technical compliance bridge for businesses navigating complex regulatory change.

The firm specialises in helping high-priority industrial sectors meet evolving EU sustainability and traceability requirements. Its coverage includes textiles, electronics, furniture and mattresses, steel and iron, toys, and building materials—industries that are expected to face early scrutiny under the new digital passport framework.

The newly launched Shield platform is designed to automate and simplify compliance with ESPR requirements. A central feature is the automatic registration of products with GS1, the globally recognised system for unique product identification. By leveraging GS1 Digital Link standards, the solution enables interoperable and machine-readable product data that aligns with EU DPP requirements.

This infrastructure aims to reduce the risk of customs rejections, regulatory investigations and turnover-based penalties that could arise from incomplete or non-compliant digital records.

Beyond registration, the platform supports automated material composition tracking and structured data management, enabling companies to maintain verifiable digital records over extended periods. DPP Link Ltd states that the system ensures 10-year data persistence, helping exporters demonstrate ongoing compliance and product traceability across the supply chain.

The company positions its infrastructure not merely as a compliance tool, but as a competitive differentiator for regional manufacturers seeking uninterrupted access to EU markets. As regulators increase enforcement and digitisation of trade documentation, the ability to provide accurate, standardised product data at scale is expected to become a prerequisite for cross-border trade within the bloc.

DPP Link Ltd director Marc Thonnissen said, “Our mission is to turn a monumental regulatory hurdle into a verifiable competitive advantage for the entire industrial base. By automating material composition tracking and ensuring 10-year data persistence, we protect regional businesses from customs blockages and maintain their essential access to the EU market.”
