Upwind raises $250m, becomes first cloud security unicorn

Upwind

Upwind, a cloud security platform, has closed a $250m Series B funding round, taking its total capital raised to more than $430m and making it the first unicorn to emerge in the modern cloud security space.

The round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, whose team included Elliott Robinson, Sameer Dholakia and Alex Yuditski, alongside Picture Capital.

The new capital arrives roughly two years after Upwind exited stealth mode, and the company said the milestone reflects the scale of investor confidence in its approach to securing complex cloud environments.

Upwind’s leadership described the raise as validation of a thesis the business has held since its founding: that the shift towards cloud, data and artificial intelligence has fundamentally altered the security challenge facing enterprises, and that legacy security models built for simpler, more static environments are no longer fit for purpose. The company said it intends to use the fresh funding to deepen investment in its platform, support a growing customer base managing increasingly complex infrastructure, and extend its coverage across AI, data and code.

Earlier funding rounds also drew high-profile backing. The company’s seed round involved Cyberstarts, led by Gili Raanan, along with Greylock, Leaders Fund and Penny Jar. Its Series A was backed by Craft, with participation from Mike Robinson and David Sacks. Former NBA player Omri Casspi was credited with helping connect Upwind’s founding team to several of its earliest investors.

Upwind provides a platform designed to give security teams continuous protection across cloud infrastructure, rather than static, point-in-time assessments. The company has positioned itself around the idea that cloud environments change constantly, and that security tooling needs to be built to match that pace, covering AI systems, data stores and application code as part of a single approach.

The business framed the Series B as an early step rather than an end point, saying it remains focused on execution as it works to expand its platform over what it described as the next two decades of cloud security demands.
