Klarna tackles impersonation scams with call detection

Klarna

Klarna, the global digital bank and flexible payments provider, has switched on in-app Call Status Detection across the Nordics, offering customers a straightforward way to check in real time whether a call claiming to be from Klarna is actually genuine.

The tool works through a simple visual cue inside the Klarna app. When a customer receives a call from someone claiming to represent Klarna, they can open the app and check the banner displayed at the top of the screen: a green banner confirms the call is verified and safe to continue, while an amber banner signals that Klarna cannot confirm the call’s legitimacy, prompting the customer to end it.

Call Status Detection extends Klarna’s broader push against fraud, sitting alongside the Klarna Inbox feature that already lets customers verify written communications such as emails, texts and letters. Together, the tools are designed to make it harder for criminals to pose as Klarna and deceive customers into handing over money or personal details.

Impersonation scams targeting banks and payment providers have become one of the fastest-growing threats facing consumers, made worse by how easily caller ID can be spoofed. According to the European Central Bank, fraudsters steal more than €4bn from victims across Europe every year.

Klarna operates as a global digital bank and flexible payments provider, offering services built around helping consumers manage their money and transactions securely.

The rollout will see Call Status Detection switched on by default for iOS users in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, with Klarna planning to extend the feature to further regions in future. Android users will need to manually activate the feature within their Klarna app settings.

Klarna Head of Financial Crime Woody Malouf said, “Scammers are getting more sophisticated and we want to do everything we can to help consumers fight back.”

Malouf added, “Adding Call Status Detection to our existing Inbox feature gives consumers an easy and quick way to verify what’s real and keep their money safe.”
