Sumsub has chosen IPinfo, a provider of IP geolocation and VPN detection data, as its main supplier of IP intelligence, in a move designed to give its clients signals they can justify to auditors and regulators.
Under the arrangement, IPinfo’s data now sits inside the Sumsub platform, feeding into the KYC and anti-fraud checks its customers run.
The decision follows a period in which clients pushed Sumsub to explain why specific IP addresses had been labelled as high risk. Sumsub found it lacked readily available evidence to back up those classifications and set out to find a data source that could withstand close examination.
Testing against Sumsub’s own known traffic showed IPinfo achieving stronger country-level accuracy and producing fewer major location mistakes, the type of error that carries the most weight in fraud and compliance outcomes. IPinfo matched the correct country for 98.77% of the addresses assessed. Half of its results landed within 20 km of the matching GPS position, while under 6% fell more than 500 km off.
The deal reflects a wider shift across FinTech and verification businesses, where IP intelligence is no longer treated as a secondary enrichment layer but as core infrastructure underpinning high-stakes decisions. As platforms contend with rising complexity, they increasingly want data that is accurate, measurable, explainable and evidence-based.
Alongside geolocation, IPinfo supplies information on location precision, anonymisation, hosting infrastructure and the network operating behind each IP address. Combined, these inputs offer Sumsub a fuller picture of every address, giving its customers added context to reach and defend decisions from onboarding through to ongoing monitoring.
Sumsub co-founder and CTO Vyacheslav Zholudev said, “Our customers rely on the signals we provide to make decisions they may ultimately have to defend to their auditors,” before adding, “So we have to be able to substantiate every signal we pass on. That is the standard we hold our data providers to. That data informs decisions long after onboarding, so it has to hold up every time. Accuracy is easy to claim and hard to prove.”
IPinfo founder and co-CEO Ben Dowling said, “When verification platforms build third-party data into their products, the quality of that data directly affects their reputations,” and added, “Providing the evidence behind our data has always been foundational to IPinfo, from how we measure the internet to how we investigate and substantiate an individual result when it’s challenged.”
