AI-led compliance needs people, not just algorithms

If 2025 was defined by financial institutions pushing to extract maximum value from existing IT investments, 2026 marks a clear shift in direction. The focus is no longer just on deploying smarter systems, but on ensuring that AI-led compliance frameworks remain accountable, interpretable and ultimately effective through sustained human oversight.

According to RelyComply, as AI becomes embedded across anti-money laundering operations, the success of these tools increasingly depends on the people governing them.

Over recent years, compliance and WebOps teams have been required to develop far broader technical skill sets to support modern AML environments. Cloud migration, security-first development, ongoing system maintenance and FinOps-driven cost optimisation have all become part of the compliance technology equation. These pressures have intensified alongside the rapid adoption of AI across regulatory use cases, exposing a widening skills gap within financial institutions and across the wider compliance ecosystem.

AI itself is not the inherent risk. The challenge lies in deploying advanced algorithms without ensuring that teams fully understand how these systems behave, learn and influence decision-making. Without strong human-in-the-loop models, AI-driven compliance risks becoming opaque, difficult to audit and disconnected from real-world regulatory expectations.

Operationally, AI has already proven its value in AML. Automated monitoring, real-time detection, scalable cloud infrastructure and data-driven risk assessments have transformed how institutions manage financial crime exposure. Yet these capabilities only deliver meaningful outcomes when compliance professionals are able to interpret outputs, challenge results and validate decisions. Regulators increasingly expect firms to demonstrate not only what decisions were made, but how AI systems influenced those outcomes and how human judgement was applied.

As AI becomes more deeply embedded in transaction monitoring and reporting, literacy across compliance teams is essential. Financial institutions now require professionals who can both understand complex AI risk models and question their conclusions. This includes recognising bias, identifying data quality issues and validating investigative outcomes against model behaviour. When structured correctly, this feedback loop improves model performance over time while reinforcing regulatory confidence.

AI literacy also plays a critical role in accountability and cybersecurity. Financial institutions manage vast volumes of sensitive customer data, making them prime targets for increasingly sophisticated cybercrime, including biometric fraud and device-based attacks. Human-led DevSecOps expertise remains vital for ensuring AI-driven platforms meet standards such as ISO 27001, comply with regional data protection laws and undergo frequent testing. Over-reliance on automation without human control can undermine both data security and customer trust.

Transparency is another growing priority as regulators scrutinise high-risk AI systems. Frameworks such as the EU’s AI Act require organisations to document how AI models are designed, trained and governed. Explainable AI has therefore become central to AML compliance, enabling institutions to trace decisions, justify automated actions and address underperforming models. This transparency reinforces the importance of keeping humans firmly embedded in AI governance structures.

Finally, effective AI-led compliance requires a broader cultural shift. As compliance becomes more technologically complex, organisations must break down silos between technology, compliance and finance teams. Collaboration across system selection, deployment and ongoing management ensures AI investments align with regulatory obligations and commercial objectives. When supported by the right skills and governance, AI-driven AML can evolve from a regulatory burden into a strategic asset.

AI will continue to challenge traditional compliance models, but its long-term success depends on human oversight. Institutions that invest in AI governance, transparency and skills development will be best positioned to build resilient, future-proof compliance frameworks.
