OneSpan acquires Nok Nok to boost passwordless security

OneSpan

OneSpan has acquired Nok Nok Labs, a pioneering provider of passwordless authentication technology and a founding member of the FIDO Alliance.

The acquisition is aimed at enhancing OneSpan’s capabilities in FIDO-based passwordless authentication, expanding its product portfolio and reinforcing its commitment to flexible, secure login methods. Although the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, OneSpan highlighted the move as a strategic leap toward delivering the most future-ready authentication solutions on the market.

OneSpan offers digital security solutions to financial institutions and other enterprises, helping protect user identities and digital interactions. Its authentication portfolio includes software and hardware-based tools such as Digipass devices, Cronto transaction signing, and recently launched FIDO2 security keys.

Nok Nok Labs, meanwhile, has been at the forefront of FIDO standards development, delivering software-based authentication solutions that support UAF and FIDO2 protocols. The company’s technology is used by major organisations across the US, Asia, and Europe.

By integrating Nok Nok’s passwordless solutions with its own technologies, OneSpan aims to offer customers a unified authentication suite with maximum deployment flexibility—whether on-premises or in the cloud, using one-time passwords or biometric authentication, and across a wide range of devices.

Nok Nok’s strong reputation in the identity authentication field will enhance OneSpan’s ability to support businesses seeking regulatory compliance and seamless digital user experiences. The deal is also seen as a boost to the broader FIDO Alliance, reinforcing the shift away from password-dependent systems.

OneSpan CEO Victor Limongelli said, “This is more than an acquisition — it’s a bold step toward providing customers with maximum choice in authentication. We’re evolving our entire authentication platform to include FIDO standards because we believe passwordless is an important part of the future. With Nok Nok’s world-class technology and FIDO expertise, we now offer the most comprehensive and versatile customer authentication solution on the market.”

Nok Nok president and CEO Phillip Dunkelberger said, “Joining OneSpan marks an exciting new chapter for our team and our technology. We’ve always believed that open standards like FIDO are an important part of the future of authentication, and with OneSpan’s global reach and innovation engine, we’re now poised to bring our vision to an even broader audience.”

FIDO Alliance executive director and CEO Andrew Shikiar said, “This is an exciting combination for the FIDO Alliance and the authentication market in general. Nok Nok has been a trailblazer in the FIDO ecosystem, and we’re thrilled to see their innovation carried forward through OneSpan’s global reach and resources.”
