US tech firm Palantir has secured a contract with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to analyse sensitive financial data as part of a drive to strengthen fraud detection using AI
The Peter Thiel-founded organisation is no stranger to working within UK public institutions, having previously collaborated with the government across a range of sectors including the NHS, law enforcement and the Ministry of Defence (MoD), said UKTN.
The new FCA contract extends that footprint further into the heart of British financial regulation, tasking the company with analysing sensitive UK financial data to bolster fraud detection methods.
The deal is worth more than £30,000 a week and forms part of Palantir’s broader presence in UK public sector contracts, which now totals more than £500m. Despite the scale of that existing relationship, the awarding of this latest contract has prompted renewed scrutiny, given the particularly sensitive nature of the financial data involved and the implications of placing it in the hands of a private US technology firm.
Palantir’s work with the British government has not been without controversy. The company has faced significant criticism over its extensive operations in a number of contentious areas, including its involvement in Israeli military activity, its work with the US government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and wider concerns about its role in invasive surveillance practices. Those concerns have followed the firm into each new public sector engagement, and the FCA contract is no exception.
The decision to hand over sensitive financial data has sparked fresh unease among legal experts. Hickman & Rose partner Christopher Houssemayne warned the Guardian: “If the FCA relies on an AI-based detection model, a bad actor could take steps to influence that system when it reviews material.”
The warning highlights a fundamental tension at the heart of deploying AI-driven tools in regulatory environments: while the technology promises greater efficiency in detecting financial crime, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that bad actors could seek to exploit. The concern is not merely theoretical — as AI becomes more embedded in regulatory infrastructure, the integrity of the models underpinning those systems becomes a critical point of risk.
