The RegTech Africa Conference & Exhibition has announced that it will host the Startup World Cup 2026 regional competition in Abuja, marking a major boost for Africa’s innovation landscape.

According to Nigeria Startup News, applications have now opened for startups that wish to participate in the global competition, which offers entrepreneurs the chance to compete on an international platform and elevate their visibility among global investors.

The Lagos regional competition, scheduled for 23–24 May, forms part of the build-up to the flagship Abuja event. Collaboration partners behind the initiative said the aim is to strengthen the continent’s innovation ecosystem by bringing together a diverse community of founders, venture capital firms, and experienced technology leaders. This regional engagement is designed to give Nigerian startups direct access to global resources while encouraging cross-border partnerships that support long-term growth.

RegTech Africa, the organiser of the conference, operates as a social enterprise dedicated to advancing regulatory technology for public good. The annual event draws thousands of regulators, policymakers, executives, and industry leaders from around the world. Its focus on dialogue and collaboration continues to support Africa’s ambitions for inclusive financial and digital development.

The Startup World Cup, a global programme of conferences and competitions, is recognised for connecting innovation hubs across more than 70 regional events. It culminates in a grand finale in San Francisco, where the winner competes for a US$1m investment prize backed by Pegasus Tech Ventures. The competition is structured across regional finals, a semi-final stage, and the global final.

For the Nigeria regional event, 10 startups will be selected to pitch before a panel of investors and serial entrepreneurs. The winning team will advance to the semi-final and grand finale stages in San Francisco. Participants in the competition also gain access to investor meetings, mentorship opportunities, and the prospect of securing funding deals.

The application process is open to startups across all industries and at any growth stage, including African companies and international founders with a strong Africa focus. The 2026 regional competition in Abuja will take place from 20–22 May at the State House Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa.
