AI use cases transforming FinTech compliance tools

AI is no longer a future consideration for financial services firms — it is already reshaping how they manage compliance, supervision, and digital communications.

According to Theta Lake, at the centre of this shift is Digital Communications Governance and Archiving (DCGA), a sector experiencing rapid AI adoption as firms grapple with exploding volumes of complex, multi-platform data.

Gartner predicts that by 2030, 70% of enterprises using DCGA solutions will adopt AI-driven features and processes, up from 40% in 2025, driven by increasing data complexity and governance demands.

Meanwhile, Gartner Peer Insights notes that organisations are increasingly turning to DCGA tools to proactively manage, monitor, collect, and archive communications content, viewing them as critical to meeting a growing number of regulatory compliance mandates.

The scale of the challenge facing compliance teams is considerable. From Zoom transcripts and Microsoft Teams messages to digital whiteboards and AI-generated summaries, financial services firms are contending with vast, intertwined communication streams. Compliance reviewers are frequently overwhelmed by false positives whilst missing key contextual signals — and this is precisely where AI is making its mark.

According to industry data, 94% of financial services firms are already using or planning to use AI-based detection capabilities. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has highlighted AI’s ability to capture and surveil large volumes of structured and unstructured data — spanning text, speech, voice, image, and video — enabling firms to monitor conduct in a more efficient, risk-based manner.

One of the most immediate applications is AI-powered summarisation of communications content. DCGA platforms such as Theta Lake can analyse conversations across multiple modalities and languages — including video, audio, chat, and AI interactions — generating summaries that capture key themes and participants.

With 82% of firms now using at least four communications and collaboration tools, from Slack and Zoom to Asana and Monday.com, the ability to distil large volumes of information quickly is invaluable for supervision teams. This capability allows firms to expedite compliance reviews, prepare for regulatory enquiries, and carry out pre-disclosure checks before sending materials to outside counsel.

Beyond single-session summaries, AI can also reconstruct and condense entire conversation histories spanning weeks or months across multiple platforms. Theta Lake’s approach, for instance, enables compliance teams to quickly grasp the essence of prolonged exchanges without having to manually sift through each interaction — significantly increasing the speed and effectiveness of supervision workflows.

AI is also being deployed to detect risks across voice, video, chat, email, and AI interactions, interpreting contextual cues such as images, GIFs, and emoji reactions. Using machine learning and natural language processing, platforms like Theta Lake can identify compliance, privacy, and security risks within shared content — flagging, for example, whether a confidential report appeared on a screen share, whether an AI notetaker was present in a meeting, or whether a required disclaimer was omitted.

Crucially, because these systems understand full context rather than merely matching keywords, they are resilient to misspellings, transcription errors, and poor-quality scans that would defeat traditional lexicon-based tools. AI-driven behavioural analytics further enhance this by identifying clusters of market non-public information triggers, anomalous communication patterns, and unexpected participant networks.

As generative AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot and Zoom AI Companion become embedded in day-to-day workflows, their governance has emerged as a new compliance frontier. Prompts and responses may contain sensitive firm information — including customer data, intellectual property, or employee details — and in some cases may carry cybersecurity risks, such as jailbreaking attempts.

Forensic-level inspection of these AI interactions allows organisations to identify sensitive data exposure, monitor for missing disclosures, and detect risky user behaviour, enabling staff to harness AI productivity tools without compromising security.

Pinpointing exactly where within a communication a risk occurs is another area where AI adds meaningful value. Theta Lake’s visual interface highlights the precise moment a sensitive topic was discussed in a meeting, chat, or call, directing reviewers immediately to the relevant section. This “single pane of glass” approach reflects the multi-platform reality of modern workplaces and ensures human reviewers can make informed decisions quickly and confidently.

Finally, AI explainability features are injecting greater transparency into the compliance process itself. When a communication is flagged, platforms can provide a plain-language rationale for the detection — for example, citing specific phrases or emoji use as indicators of an attempt to obscure information. These audit-ready summaries allow human reviewers to verify alerts and defend decisions to regulators with confidence.

Taken together, these use cases illustrate that AI in DCGA has firmly moved from theoretical promise to practical, everyday deployment. Firms are moving past unsustainable manual review processes, gaining complete oversight of modern communications without sacrificing productivity — and empowering compliance teams to keep pace with an increasingly complex digital environment.
