NatWest taps Cleareye.ai to overhaul trade finance

NatWest has announced a strategic collaboration with Cleareye.ai, an AI solutions specialist for trade finance, to modernise its trade operations and bolster its financial crime risk management capabilities.

As part of the partnership, NatWest will deploy ClearTrade, Cleareye.ai’s AI-powered platform, which automates the extraction and classification of data from complex trade documents across both paper and digital formats. The platform will also carry out automated document examinations in line with International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) rules — globally recognised standards governing cross-border trade, commercial transactions and dispute resolution — as well as conducting compliance and Trade Based Money Laundering (TBML) checks to reduce operational risk.

The initiative forms part of NatWest’s broader transformation programme, which centres on improving customer service through operational excellence, regulatory compliance and scalable innovation. By automating document workflows and strengthening oversight mechanisms, the bank aims to increase the speed and certainty with which clients can access international markets, while also equipping its staff to deliver more personalised service.

Cleareye.ai is a specialist provider of artificial intelligence solutions designed specifically for trade finance, with ClearTrade built to deliver both automation and compliance outcomes simultaneously.

NatWest trade product lead, commercial and institutional Michael Gilham said, “As Britain’s biggest business bank, we’re focused on giving customers the confidence to seize growth opportunities. This partnership will help them trade in foreign markets with greater speed and certainty, while enabling our colleagues to deliver a more personalised and productive service.”

Gilham added, “It will also strengthen protection against fraud and financial crime, by using innovative technology to enable us to provide better service to our customers. As we embrace leading, innovative technologies, we remain committed to harnessing them responsibly enhancing customer experiences while strengthening our risk and control environment. At every stage, we will prioritise the safety, trust, and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues.”

Cleareye.ai CEO and co-founder Mariya George said, “NatWest is leading the way in reimagining trade finance, and we are proud to support their innovation journey. ClearTrade is purpose built to deliver both automation and compliance outcomes, and we are excited to help NatWest unlock scalable impact for their teams and their clients.”
