RegTech company Shield has brought former HSBC executive Michelle Clark on board as global communications surveillance expert, adding senior banking expertise as financial institutions reassess how they manage communications risks amid growing AI adoption and regulatory scrutiny.
Clark, who previously led communications surveillance capability globally at HSBC, will help guide Shield’s product strategy and ensure its technology reflects the changing needs of compliance teams. Her appointment comes as financial institutions begin setting priorities for 2027, with firms under pressure to modernise surveillance processes while maintaining effective risk controls and regulatory oversight.
With more than two decades of experience in global banking, Clark has worked across regulatory transformation, communications and trade surveillance, model governance and financial crime controls. She has also focused on applying emerging technologies to compliance challenges, helping institutions adapt their operating models to changing regulatory and technological demands.
Her experience includes leading international transformation programmes, building global teams and designing future-state operating models. Clark has also worked with regulators and senior banking leaders to turn developments in AI, machine learning and cloud technology into practical solutions for highly regulated organisations.
“As financial institutions redefine their compliance priorities for 2027 and beyond, the convergence of AI, communications surveillance and risk governance is fundamentally changing what they expect from technology partners,” said Eran Noam, co-founder and chief business officer at Shield.
“Michelle brings something invaluable to Shield: the perspective of someone who has led transformation from inside global financial institutions and understands what it takes to turn innovation into operational reality. Her expertise will help financial institutions get more from our platform and ensure it addresses the real-world challenges compliance organizations face. This appointment reinforces our commitment to building technology shaped by the people who understand the industry’s challenges firsthand.”
Clark said surveillance teams faced growing challenges as communication channels became more complex, regulatory expectations evolved and AI changed how institutions managed risk.
“Having spent more than two decades working inside global financial institutions, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges surveillance teams face as communications grow more complex, regulatory expectations evolve and AI reshapes the way institutions manage risk,” said Clark.
“The industry needs a better way forward, and I joined Shield because I believe it can lead that change. I want to help surveillance teams act with confidence and run surveillance programs that are effective, explainable and trusted by institutions and regulators alike.”
The appointment comes as Shield continues to develop its AI capabilities, including agentic orchestration, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration and further product innovation.
