ANZ is set to become the first bank in Australia to launch a completely password-free web banking experience, with the rollout of Password-less Web Banking for its digital platform, ANZ Plus, expected in mid-2025.
The move aims to bolster online security while making the banking experience simpler and more user-friendly for customers.
The upcoming feature will allow users to log into ANZ Plus Web Banking without needing to enter a password. Instead, customers can choose between two authentication methods: using a passkey—such as fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN—or by providing their mobile number and approving the login via the secure ANZ Plus app. By eliminating passwords, the bank is taking a significant step toward reducing fraud risks and enhancing protection against phishing attacks and data breaches.
ANZ group executive Australia retail Maile Carnegie said, “The introduction of Password-less Web Banking will revolutionise the way customers access their bank account. Not only will it be easier than ever to log into your account, we’re helping our customers bank with confidence knowing their accounts are secure.
“By introducing this change, we’re helping prevent customer log in details from the risk of data breaches or phishing attacks – providing an extra layer of protection and one less thing for customers to worry about when it comes to banking security.”
The initiative forms part of a broader investment by ANZ into advanced security technology aimed at reducing scams and cyber threats. Among its current suite of security features is CallSafe, which authenticates customers calling the bank without requiring sensitive information. Since its launch in November 2024, this system has been used over 20,000 times to confirm customer identities safely.
Additionally, ANZ is preparing to launch Digital Padlock in mid-2025, a tool that will enable customers to instantly lock down their account access if they suspect fraudulent activity. The bank has also established a First Responders team, a specialised group supporting scam-affected customers. Over the past year, the team has managed approximately 140,000 calls, resolving nearly all at the first point of contact.
Another key tool in ANZ’s anti-scam arsenal is the Scam Safe feature, which combines various protective technologies such as geolocation tracking and screen-sharing detection. Furthermore, ANZ Plus now incorporates enhanced biometrics from the onboarding stage, using ID and selfie verification. These biometric tools are later used to validate PIN resets or approve higher-value transactions, adding another layer of security across the customer journey.
With the launch of Password-less Web Banking, ANZ is urging its customers to remain vigilant against digital fraud. The bank’s reminders include never clicking on suspicious links, avoiding sharing personal details with unverified sources, and contacting the bank immediately if something feels wrong.
By embracing biometric and passkey login technology, ANZ continues to raise the bar for secure digital banking, setting a new benchmark for the industry in Australia.
