Coadjute, a PropTech firm backed by Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest and Nationwide, has unveiled Clara, the first digital human in the UK built to support estate agents and their clients through AML checks.
Property remains one of the most exploited channels for financial crime in the UK, with an estimated £10bn laundered through the sector annually, financing organised crime, human trafficking, corruption and sanctions evasion. Tightening regulation in response to this has placed growing pressure on estate agents to demonstrate full compliance.
Clara is an intelligent, conversational assistant embedded within Coadjute’s platform, designed to guide buyers and sellers through the AML process. She can explain what AML checks involve, outline the specific documents required and assist users with uploading them in a clear and accessible way. Unlike a conventional chatbot, Clara draws on Coadjute’s compliance infrastructure to bring sophisticated AML risk understanding to each interaction, responding in real time as new information is submitted to request anything further that may be needed.
Despite the role Clara plays, human oversight remains central to the process. Every check completed via the platform is reviewed and signed off by a qualified compliance professional. Clara’s value lies in extending that expertise — including by operating around the clock to accommodate international buyers in different time zones, or UK-based clients completing checks outside of business hours.
Coadjute describes the new platform as “AI-native”, meaning artificial intelligence was built into its foundations rather than bolted on after the fact. Beyond Clara, the platform equips estate agents and conveyancers with tools to monitor individual risk indicators, adjust evidence thresholds and track compliance progress with greater visibility and control than previously available.
The updated platform is being rolled out to existing users over the coming six months and is available to selected new customers from today.
Coadjute CEO Dan Salmons said, “We wanted the next generation of Coadjute’s platform to use AI not to replace people, but to work seamlessly with them. Clara makes the process so easy and intuitive for buyers and sellers – especially those who aren’t ‘tech savyy’ – and the many new features of the platform all help estate agents and conveyancers achieve really high levels of AML compliance without the burden. It’s transformative.”
Broadcaster and Coadjute ambassador Phil Spencer said, “Coadjute have come up with a real game-changer here. Estate agents are on the front-line of the battle against money laundering, and the new version of their platform is going to be a massive help. Home buyers and sellers are really going to love Clara, she makes the whole process so easy, she’s really quite astonishing.”
