How CSR and ESG differ and why they’re crucial for business success

July 04, 2024
ESG

In the modern business landscape, the distinction between CSR and ESG practices is becoming increasingly significant.

According to Greenomy, both frameworks aim to promote sustainable business operations, but they differ substantially in their approach and application.

Corporate Social Responsibility has evolved since Howard Bowen’s 1950s concept in “Social Responsibilities of the Businessman.” It initially focused on the broader impact businesses have on society and has grown to include detailed strategies that encompass social and environmental considerations as central to business operations.

Transitioning from CSR to ESG marks a shift towards more quantifiable and regulated sustainability practices. ESG, unlike the voluntary and qualitative nature of CSR, is governed by strict regulatory frameworks that demand detailed disclosures on sustainable practices.

Environmental, Social, and Governance frameworks have grown out of the CSR movement, with a focus on aligning business strategies with ethical investments since the 1970s. The 1990s saw the establishment of pivotal standards like the Global Reporting Initiative, which have paved the way for today’s ESG criteria.

While CSR focuses on broader social impacts and corporate ethics, ESG zeroes in on measurable impacts that businesses have on the environment, society, and corporate governance. ESG’s rigorous approach involves regular and detailed reporting against standardized global benchmarks.

The relevance of CSR and ESG frameworks has surged as they contribute significantly to a company’s sustained success and competitive edge. With growing public awareness and regulatory pressures, these frameworks help companies maintain trust, attract investments, and ensure long-term viability.

For companies looking to adopt these frameworks, understanding their key components is crucial. Implementing CSR involves integrating ethical practices into corporate culture, while ESG requires comprehensive data management and compliance with global standards.

CSR and ESG are not just about compliance; they are strategic frameworks that enhance corporate reputation, engage stakeholders, and drive sustainable business success. As businesses navigate the complexities of modern markets, understanding and implementing both CSR and ESG is essential.
