Commerzbank taps Hawk AI to sharpen AML detection

Commerzbank, one of Germany’s largest banks, has entered into a partnership with Hawk, an AI-powered anti-money laundering (AML) and fraud prevention technology provider, to strengthen its internal compliance capabilities using artificial intelligence.

At the centre of the collaboration is Hawk’s “AML AI Extended Risk Model” solution, which works alongside Commerzbank’s existing rule-based compliance systems to enhance the bank’s ability to detect financial crime.

Since implementing the solution, Commerzbank has increased the accuracy of alerts and reduced false positives, identified more novel cases of money laundering and fraud, and expanded software validation to incorporate robust AI model governance.

A key feature of the solution is its ability to integrate seamlessly with legacy systems through a dedicated integration layer, allowing banks to benefit from advanced AI models without requiring time-consuming updates to their existing technology infrastructure.

Hawk specialises in providing AI-powered AML and fraud prevention technology to banks and payment providers globally. Its platform combines traditional rule-based detection with explainable AI to help financial institutions identify more criminal activity while reducing operational inefficiencies caused by false positive alerts.

Commerzbank Cluster Lead Global Financial Crime Prevention Platform Viktor Kraus said, “Given the complexity of the landscape, we can only successfully combat financial crime with the help of AI. It is a high strategic priority for us to proactively and continuously expand our compliance system architecture.”

Hawk CEO Tobias Schweiger said, “Banks must adapt to new threat scenarios in money laundering. Our AI-driven solution helps achieve this.”

Schweiger added, “Our software enables compliance teams to improve the quality and transparency of money laundering detection and investigations. In this context, the explainable nature of our AI plays a central role – particularly regarding regulatory approval.”

Commerzbank group chief compliance officer Hans-Georg Beyer said, “Commerzbank is using its position as a pioneer to conduct its fight against money laundering in an even more targeted manner. The collaboration with Hawk is a vital step in this direction.”
