Daon patent tackles AI agent authorisation risks

Daon, The Digital Identity Trust Company, has been granted a new patent tackling one of the toughest problems facing agentic AI deployments in regulated sectors.

The patent gives enterprises the ability to control whether a particular AI agent is permitted to carry out a specific action against a protected tool, service, account, or API.

Granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on 21 July 2026, the patent, titled “Methods and Systems for Authorizing Invocation of a Tool by an Autonomous Artificial Intelligence Agent,” marks the third in a line of patents from Daon focused on securing and governing agentic AI.

Combined, the three patents cover the full lifecycle of agent oversight: the ongoing relationship between a person and their agent, the reliability of the agent’s behaviour, and the authorisation needed for the agent to carry out individual tasks.

Under the newly patented system, an authorisation checkpoint reviews each agent request by weighing its continuing connection to the person it is acting for, the reliability of how the agent has been executing, and the circumstances surrounding the requested task.

Once these conditions are met, the system issues what is described as a “digital permission slip,” setting out boundaries such as the type of action allowed, its scope, and how long the permission lasts. The granted claims also cover brief authorisation windows, restricted delegation tools, caps on rate and transaction volume, binding actions to their execution context, evidence drawn from attestation, and protections against replayed sessions.

Daon CEO Tom Grissen said, “Agentic AI is unlikely to safely move from experimentation into high-value production environments on intelligence alone. It requires identity, policy, containment, and evidence at the moment an agent attempts to act. This patent strengthens Daon’s ability to help enterprises move beyond the false choice between blocking autonomous agents and granting them broad standing authority.”
