Identomat, an identity verification platform provider, has released a major update to its identity verification infrastructure, targeting digital onboarding friction while maintaining the identity assurance and fraud controls required by regulated businesses.
The update, internally named Mercury, covers the full verification workflow and introduces a redesigned interface, enhanced Liveness Check, more configurable document capture and review, cross-device verification and support for non-standard document types.
The changes are aimed at addressing common causes of friction in KYC-driven onboarding, including failed document captures, repeat verification attempts and users abandoning the process.
The redesigned interface provides clearer step-by-step guidance, while businesses can customise consent screens and instructional content to align with their own onboarding and compliance requirements. Users can also change their preferred language at any point during the verification process, rather than being required to select one at the beginning.
Identomat has also rebuilt its Liveness Check, adding clearer progress indicators and on-screen prompts alongside additional anti-fraud controls operating in the background.
Document capture has been redesigned to use on-device AI to detect and automatically frame identification documents, even when they are not centred within the camera view. Manual capture remains available where required.
The updated workflow also adds a review stage, allowing users to check their ID images and data extracted through optical character recognition (OCR) before completing verification. Users can retake images or correct information at this stage, potentially reducing downstream data-quality issues and repeat verification.
According to Identomat, early partners using the redesigned flow have reported a 20% increase in onboarding speed, a 35% reduction in false rejections, a 70% reduction in manual interventions and a 30% decrease in user abandonment.
If sustained at scale, the figures could point to lower operational workloads for businesses while reducing friction for legitimate customers. False rejections and manual review are particularly relevant to regulated insurers and financial institutions, where onboarding teams must balance conversion with fraud and compliance requirements.
Mercury also introduces cross-device verification, allowing users to begin verification on one device and complete it on another through a QR code, SMS or email link, or a copied link.
The functionality is designed to support both remote and in-person onboarding, giving businesses more flexibility across digital and hybrid customer journeys.
The update also includes AnyDoc, which allows businesses to configure verification for document types beyond standard identity documents. These can include vehicle registration documents, tax identification documents and other paperwork required for specific use cases.
For insurers, the changes are relevant to a wider shift towards digital and automated onboarding, where identity verification needs to provide sufficient assurance without creating unnecessary barriers for customers.
Additional checks and failed verification attempts can increase abandonment and operational costs, while weaker controls can increase exposure to fraud and regulatory risk. The challenge for verification providers is therefore to improve the customer experience without reducing the strength of the underlying controls.
