LSEG launches Active Intelligence to cut screening noise

LSEG Risk Intelligence, the risk data arm of the London Stock Exchange Group, has rolled out Active Intelligence, a new AI-driven data engine for its World-Check platform that aims to reduce manual screening work for compliance teams.

The engine, built on Amazon Bedrock, now sits beneath all World-Check data. It adds more secondary identifiers, gives clearer visibility into where each record comes from, and keeps records more complete and up to date.

The data is also refined on an ongoing basis, so what customers screen against improves over time. LSEG Risk Intelligence says this gives banks, non-bank financial institutions, FinTechs and corporates better information and more confidence when checking customers and business partners for financial crime and reputational risk, while also helping them onboard clients faster.

The first commercial offering to run on the engine is World-Check Resolve. It is available within World-Check One through both the user interface and an API, and uses advanced matching to separate likely genuine hits from irrelevant ones.

In trials across 650,000 screening cases, the tool removed an average of 74% of false positives without dismissing a single true positive. Each result comes with its supporting reasoning, so analysts can spend their time on cases that need real investigation rather than clearing weak name matches again and again.

Amazon Web Services supplied the technical and engineering groundwork, including its cloud infrastructure. The partnership pairs AWS technology with LSEG’s risk data and sector knowledge to deliver AI that works at global scale while staying governed, explainable and auditable.

LSEG stresses that the system is meant to assist people, not replace them. Its specialists still oversee data curation and quality checks, customer analysts still review and close cases, and the final risk or compliance decision stays with the customer.

The launch follows a study by LSEG Risk Intelligence of 600 senior risk and compliance leaders. Although 94% said they trusted their screening data to be complete and current, just 48% believed they could very easily produce a full audit trail if a regulator asked for one. In addition, 41% said their organisation was not fully ready for tougher regulatory scrutiny.

Manual verification also remains common: 69% said they frequently or always check screening outcomes against another source before acting, and 93% said they do so at least some of the time.

The firm calls this the “decision gap”, meaning the distance between spotting a possible risk and having the context, logic, ownership and evidence needed to act on it and justify that action later.

LSEG Risk Intelligence group head David Wilson said, “Effective screening depends on two things: the quality of the data and the ability to find the matches that matter. Active Intelligence strengthens both, and it keeps strengthening them, this is data that learns. Screening is deliberately sensitive, and it can leave compliance teams reviewing results that ultimately prove irrelevant.

“In testing across 650,000 screening cases, World-Check Resolve reduced false-positive alerts by an average of 74%, without suppressing any true positives. That means less unnecessary work and clearer evidence, not less visibility. Analysts can see why a match surfaced, and our customers retain control of the final decision.”

AWS VP & managing director, EMEA Tanuja Randery said, “Financial institutions need AI that operates securely and resiliently at scale, while remaining transparent and governed. Our collaboration with LSEG Risk Intelligence supports the technology and engineering foundations behind Active Intelligence, combining AWS capabilities with LSEG’s trusted risk intelligence data, domain expertise and commitment to explainability and human oversight.”
