Canaan leads $35m bet on Mate’s AI security push

Mate Security, an AI-native security operations platform, has secured a $35m Series A round, pushing its total capital raised beyond $50m only eight months after coming out of stealth.

Canaan Partners led the round, which was first reported by Axios, with backing from Insight Partners, Team8 and M12, the venture arm of Microsoft. Investors who backed the business previously also took part, building on an oversubscribed $15.5m Seed round that was unveiled when the firm left stealth.

The fresh capital arrives on the back of rapid commercial momentum. Mate reports growth in excess of 500% since the third quarter of 2025, fuelled by Fortune 500 enterprises seeking security operations platforms capable of keeping pace with increasingly sophisticated, AI-driven cyber threats.

At the heart of the company’s pitch is a simple problem: security teams cannot always tell whether conclusions produced by AI deserve their confidence. Mate tackles this by equipping AI systems with knowledge of the business they defend. Its platform rests on a patent-pending context layer that fuses organisational knowledge with security telemetry, so AI agents can weigh factors beyond purely technical signals. Repeated failed logins, for instance, might reflect a planned security drill rather than an attack, while access to confidential documents could stem from restructuring or file ownership rather than an insider threat. The firm claims this context enables specialised agents to detect, investigate, respond and hunt threats more precisely while cutting needless escalations.

Mate’s architecture also features persistent memory that develops with each investigation, structured communication between agents, and least-agency principles restricting permissions to what each task demands. Its Security Context Graph serves as a central store of enterprise knowledge, letting agents built by Mate, partners or customers draw on a single governed information source with controls over permissions, auditability and response.

Mate Security CEO and co-founder Asaf Wiener said, “When we started Mate, we knew we had to invest in the foundation: context and trust, and build them deeply into our product. We brought in some of the best AI builders and security experts, and I’m excited to see how well this approach is being received by the market.

“We will continue moving fast and stay laser-focused on our customers, as we expand into new markets and categories to build the Open Security Operations foundation of the future.”
